Why five kanal, and why
only ten marla of it is built

Five kanal is more than half an acre. Capping construction at ten marla is the decision that makes everything else possible.

Most plots in Pakistan are sized to be sold: five marla, seven, ten. A house fills the plot, a wall surrounds it, and the family lives inside the wall. Zen Valley starts from a different question: how much land does a family need to actually live from it?

The arithmetic

One kanal is twenty marla, about 5,445 square feet. Five kanal is roughly 27,000 square feet: a square about 165 feet on each side, a little more than half an acre. On that land, one workable layout is a home of up to ten marla with a pool and covered parking, a kitchen garden of about 4,000 square feet, an orchard of thirty trees with two or three beehives, a shed and run for goats and hens, a small grain patch, and open ground for nothing in particular.

The cap

Construction on every plot is limited to ten marla. It is the most important rule in the valley. It keeps ninety marla green, keeps the water table fed, keeps the view from every veranda a view of land and not of walls, and it keeps the valley a valley rather than a colony.

Ten marla built. Ninety marla alive.

Your own boundary

Every plot has its own boundary, a low wall softened with a living hedge, so privacy is real without being a fortress. Behind it, the layout is yours. The learning centre helps you plan it, and the plan on our plots page is only one starting point.
